275-bed Evergreen Hospital Medical Center is the cornerstone of services provided by King County Public Hospital District No. 2. These include medical groups, home care, hospice and many community health programs.
Evergreen's Purpose
Working together to enrich the health and well-being of every life we touch.
Accreditation
Evergreen Hospital is fully accredited by The Joint Commission (JCAHO), the nation's oldest and largest health care accrediting body. JCAHO surveyors perform a rigorous inspection of Evergreen Hospital, Evergreen Home Care Services, Evergreen Hospice Services and the Evergreen Medical Group every three years, with the most recent occurring in 2009.
The Washington State Department of Health also conducts a multi-day survey every three years as part of Evergreen's license renewal process. They review the quality of both the clinical services and the facility, and interview staff, patients and their families. The most recent survey was completed in late 2007.
Evergreen's History
In the mid 1960s, the move to the northeast King County suburbs was just beginning. But a group of concerned residents envisioned a time in the future when the area would need its own hospital.
They proposed forming a public hospital district and raising the money to build that hospital with tax-supported bonds. The voters approved formation of King County Public Hospital District No. 2 in November 1967, and Evergreen General Hospital opened its doors on March 9, 1972.
Today's sprawling Evergreen Hospital Medical Center bears little resemblance to the modest three-story building that opened in 1972. Over the years, the community's support has been key to Evergreen's development. Additional voter approved bonds have provided:
- Completion of the hospital's third floor
- Addition of a fourth floor
- A new emergency department and Medic One base
- The Evergreen Hospice Center
- Expanded the Emergency Department
- Built a seven-story patient tower
Today's Evergreen Hospital provides more than just acute hospital care. Evergreen is active in the community with wellness initiatives designed to promote healthier lifestyles. Programs like Healthcare Access make sure the community's under- and uninsured residents have access to affordable health care services. Evergreen also created the Evergreen Medical Group (now Evergreen Primary Care) to guarantee family practice physicians would always be available to the community.
What began with a handful of northeast King County residents back in the mid-60s has developed into the Eastside's most active full service health care provider - and a true community asset.
Look back at 35 years of Evergreen's history and expansion.
