Construction is under way on the new Elling & Barbara Halvorson Cancer Center, which will be located at EvergreenHealth.
The new center will both expand and consolidate the well-regarded cancer care provided by Evergreen Cancer Services. The new facility will enable us to continue providing breakthrough care by providing the best technology, expanding access, and bringing all facets of a patient’s cancer treatment together in one patient-centered location.
When you learn you have cancer, it can be overwhelming. You want to have access to the most advanced treatments, the best doctors and the latest technology. But just as important, you want expert partners who take the time to listen to you and guide you to the best care for you.
That’s the goal of the Halvorson Cancer Center at EvergreenHealth. When it opens in the fall of 2012 the center will be staffed with expert doctors from EvergreenHealth and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance working together for the first time at a facility on the Evergreen Health campus to integrate comprehensive treatment options with a full complement of support services in a single center.
Patients will receive the breakthrough care in radiation and medical oncology that they’ve always had at Evergreen, along with Evergreen’s integrated approach that offers treatment together with an education and resource center, pain management care, nutritional information and education, Cancer Lifeline’s supportive care services, and social workers to help you navigate the maze of challenges so that you have less anxiety.
At the same time, patients will have on site access to the research programs of the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance involved in developing more effective chemotherapy and radiation therapies with milder side effects, new targeted therapies, along with minimally invasive surgical techniques. All with Eastside access to the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in the region.
The state-of-the-art design of the new 26,000 square-foot Halvorson Cancer Center combines easy access with a warm and comforting environment that eases anxiety and promotes healing. Each of the treatment spaces will incorporate garden views combined with natural building materials and comfortable furnishings so that patients can feel more at home.
Central registration will coordinate appointments for radiation and medical oncology, surgery, laboratory tests, inpatient and outpatient treatments saving you time and stress. Your cancer care team including specialists, nurses, rehabilitation therapists, technologists, social workers and staff will all be working in the same facility allowing you and your care team easier, more frequent communication.
Taken all together the new Halvorson Cancer Center at Evergreen in collaboration with the SCCA will offer the first destination cancer center on the Eastside.

Construction Zone and Detours Phase 2 |
For the next several months, we’ll be creating some temporary detours around the construction area in the hospital’s red, green and purple zones. The detour routes will be well marked, and volunteers and staff members will be happy to help you. We apologize for the temporary inconvenience, but we think you’ll agree the new cancer center will be more than worth it.
The detour routes will change during the construction phases. Check back for updated detour maps.
