Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility for of surgical therapy for obesity involves the use of these key measures:

  • The patient must be an adult (at least 18 years of age)
  • If severely obese (BMI 35.0 - 39.9) must have:
    - two or more obesity-related comorbidities
    - chronic obesity
    - failure of nonsurgical weight loss
  • If morbidly obese (BMI >40) must have:
    - chronic obesity
    - failure of nonsurgical weight loss
  • There can be no treatable disease processes responsible for weight gain
  • Must be prepared to make major lifestyle changes

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measurement of your body fat based on height and weight.
